In recent years, there has been a growing global interest in combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design. Industries focused on cultural heritage are flourishing as artisans and designers find ways to keep endangered skills alive while creating meaningful, contemporary objects. Consumers increasingly value products that carry a story, reflect identity, and preserve history. In this evolving space of heritage-inspired design, JUZUR stands out as a brand that blends architecture, language, and artisan skills to create truly unique cultural objects.

Founded in 2023 by architect Joanne Hennaoui Audi, JUZUR emerged from a deeply personal desire to remain connected to Lebanon’s roots. Amid social and economic challenges, Joanne sought to use her architectural expertise to create objects that reflect identity, language, and resilience. Through freestanding Arabic letters crafted by skilled local artisans, the brand captures both heritage and innovation.

Inspiration Rooted in Identity and Connection

The concept for JUZUR began during the turmoil in Lebanon in 2019. Joanne experienced a profound feeling of displacement, which sparked the desire to preserve a sense of home and identity. She realized that language is the first and most universal marker of origin, and Arabic, as her mother tongue, could become the medium for connection. This led to the idea of freestanding Arabic letters, not as calligraphy, but as structured forms that stand independently while communicating cultural meaning.

Driven by a personal vision, Joanne connected with young artisans from Tripoli, North Lebanon, whose traditional woodcarving skills were endangered. Many of these craftsmen had inherited their knowledge from ancestors but were no longer practicing due to lack of opportunities. By collaborating with them, JUZUR revived these artisan skills, transforming them into a sustainable, meaningful, and culturally resonant product.

The Meaning Behind the Name and the Craft

JUZUR means “roots” in Arabic, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage. Each freestanding letter is more than decorative—it is a structural piece that must stand independently, which gives the work both artistic and architectural significance. Joanne provides specific technical drawings for every letter, ensuring that the artisans can faithfully realize the design while maintaining stability and elegance.

The letters are also customizable, allowing clients to create single letters or entire words for gifts, home décor, or personal keepsakes. Sustainability remains central to the process, with reclaimed wood and natural, recycled packaging crafted by artisans from southern Lebanon. Each piece carries the values of heritage, sustainability, and empowerment while showcasing the artisans’ craftsmanship.

Reviving Tradition While Shaping the Future

Working with the Tripoli artisans presented unique challenges. Since the letters are structurally freestanding, they are not traditional calligraphy. Many craftsmen initially struggled with the concept because it diverged from the aesthetic forms they were trained in. Joanne’s approach was deliberate: the focus is on architectural structure rather than visual perfection, making the letters functional statements of identity rather than mere decorative pieces. Over time, collaboration and dialogue helped the artisans embrace this vision.

Looking forward, JUZUR aims to expand beyond Lebanon while maintaining its fair trade and sustainable values. The brand plans to participate in international design fairs, establish eco-conscious distribution channels, and continue empowering artisans. For Joanne, the future of JUZUR is about creating objects that preserve heritage, support skilled craftspeople, and allow the world to experience Arabic culture through meaningful design.
